Short Rows & Lace | Summer Seasons Club 2025

Short rows and lace, in one summer project?
If that sounds like a lot, don’t worry. Let me show you why it’s simpler than it seems.

This season, we’ll be exploring a technique I’ve never taught before in our Seasons Club. It’s a thoughtful introduction to short row shaping, combining two different techniques and pairing it with a light lace pattern that’s easy to follow and enjoyable to knit. If you’ve been curious about short rows but haven’t quite taken the leap, this is the perfect place to begin.

Seasons Club Summer 2025

Are you ready for a summer of short rows and lace? I promise it’s not as scary as it sounds! If you’d like to see our club yarns as I chat through our club you can press play here:

Our project for this knitting club will feature a shawl with option armholes, allowing it be worn also as a vest. If you are new to lace the pattern will be an easy one to memorise, allowing you to learn how to read your lace knitting as you work. There will be two different types of short rows introduced, allowing you to see the different places you would use different techniques.

And if you’re wondering what type of short rows … well, we will be knitting both German Short Rows and Japanese Short Rows in our project.

We will be working German Short Rows across the back of the shawl in garter stitch. They are fast to work and look great from both the right and wrong side of your work. Then we will be moving into Japanese Short Rows as we slide into an easy-to-memorise lace pattern. This type of short row is excellent anywhere you have an open stitch pattern and you want the short row to be as tidy as possible.

We have never worked Japanese Short Rows in our club before and they have a few great advantages; they create a very small loop, which allows them to be used in situations where other methods would be very visible. Plus, they make it really easy to see where your short rows are located!

And before I give too much away about this club’s pattern, I’ll share our yarn options for some striking summer shawls:

Seasons Knitting Club Summer Yarn 2025

The yarn for this Seasons Club is soft as butter and it just slides through your fingers as you knit. The yardage is a very generous 876 yds / 800 m between the two skeins of 50/50 silk/merino which has been hand-dyed in Cork by Life In The Long Grass. This allows you to knit a long, drapey and luxurious shawl.

Our subtle colour for this club is called Celestial and it’s what I chose to knit my sample shawl in. Our other two yarn options are Harbour which is a beautiful semi-solid blue (our Seasonal colourway option) and Power a beauiful intense pink (for our Bright option).

Summer 2025 Club Timing

Our summer season will be open for new sign-ups from 4pm 1st June until the 14th of June (or while stocks last). We have very limited stock of some colours, so if you want to ensure your colour pick order early!
