Are you ready for warmer weather?
I was ready weeks ago and I’m impatiently waiting for its arrival. The days are getting brighter but it’s still very cold here in Ireland. However, this doesn’t stop me from preparing a lightweight cardigan that I’ll want to wear all summer long. This cardigan will have you exploring lace and shaping all worked with some relaxing garter stitch for those all-important rest rows.
Lása Cardigan Construction
This cardigan is pretty much my dream lightweight cardigan; it’s loose-fitting, there’s lots of lace and it was fun to knit. Lása uses a modular construction beginning with a central back panel in garter stitch. When this was finished I moved on to the right front, working the shaping with short rows in garter stitch. From here it was joined with the side of the back panel and the shoulder worked flat, in lace from side to side.
Once the shoulder was complete the sleeve was joined in the round and worked from the top down until the cuff. I’ve worked the sleeve as a 3/4 length, with a gathered garter cuff. I’d encourage you to try it on as you knit so that you can ensure that the sleeve length is perfect for you. I wanted to make sure it was below my elbow as I find it more comfortable to wear. You could also go more oversized with the sleeve, working more decreases at the cuff to give a larger gather.
Once the right side is finished you will then do the very same on the left side. At this stage, you can actually try it on as you’ve completed a short little shrug!
Now that the upper body and sleeves are complete it’s time to move on to the main body. This is picked up from the bottom of the upper body and knit from the top down. I’ve worked it in a series of garter and lace stripes with no shaping. Due to the garter stripes, it would also be very easy to add some a-line shaping if you wanted to. Another option that will be given in the pattern is the option to have all over lace instead of lace/garter stripes.
Now that you are almost complete, the final stage is the button band. This is worked all around in garter stitch and finished with an I-Cord edging. (My favourite!)
I really enjoyed knitting this cardigan, you do want to make sure that you’ve got a super pointy needle though for the oversized lace.
