This Seasons Club is a bumper edition, with 4 patterns coming your way by Irish designer Eimear Earley. Fortunately, there is 300g of yarn in this installment, so plenty to work on all the patterns if you so desire.
These bright twinkly patterns will bring a spark of light to dark winter days. Even the names of the patterns reinforce this:
- Léas is Irish for ‘glimmer’, (pronounced lace / lay-us, depending on dialect) and uses motifs inspired by twinkling fairy lights and flickering candle flames.
- Réaltra (pronounced as rail-trah) is the Irish for galaxy or group of stars.
Three of the patterns are variations on each other, using the same basic chart to create 3 different knitted items. These are the Léas Tea Cosy, Coffee Cosy, and Hat.
Now not everyone will want both a tea and coffee cosy (most of us fall into one of the two camps) but both are a fantastic way of practicing steeks. The knitted items are fairly small, making it a very low stakes (no pun intended!) way of cutting into your knitting. For the tea cosy, you’ll have bridge stitches added for both the spout and handle opening and the coffee cosy has a bridge added for the entire length to cut the work.
Oh, and if you’re wondering if you can still join the club, pop down here.
Why we steek in knitting.
If you’ve never cut your knitting before, you might wonder why you need to use steeks.
The main reason is to simplify your colourwork knitting. Colourwork is much simpler to work in the round, but this limits its usability. Steeks are a way of reinforcing and cutting your knitting, which allows you to knit in the round but still make a flat piece of work. It can be scary but trust me, it’s actually a lot of fun!!
If you are not a tea or coffee drinker, then the Léas hat is the pattern for you. It uses the same colourwork chart but there is no steeking. Just work in the round, finish the crown and add a super cute pom pom.

Réaltra Mitts
The Réaltra Mitts are fast, easy mitts that allow you to use a simple slip stitch texture pattern to create a lovely interplay between the colours. The combination of lifted stitches and yarn overs creates the star like stitch pattern, but don’t worry, these will fly off your needles in just a few hours.
You can see two sizing options given in the photos, they are shown in brights with the medium size and a little positive ease and in small (subtle) with a tiny amount of negative ease. Both work well, just pick your preference!
