I’m a bit slow off the mark blogging about this sweater as it came out before Christmas!  I did however want to tell you a little about Hathaway.  I’m sitting here with our first snowy morning in Cork for 2 (or maybe 3?) years so warm winter sweaters are very appealing right now.

Jared Flood is the man behind Brooklyn Tweed.  He started out as a designer and blogger and a few years ago started up his own line of yarn that is a little different as it is entirely sourced and milled in the US.  The yarn has a distinctive rustic, tweedy feel that I love and the color pallet is a perfect mix of rich and muted colors.

A couple of times a year Brooklyn Tweed releases a collection of patterns from guest designers, I was very pleased to be part of his Wool People 4 collection.

My contribution to this collection is Hathaway, a cabled sweater knit in the round from the bottom up. The body of the sweater is ribbed but with a subtle cable details running through the ribbing.  The center of the front and back has a larger cable panel that flows seamlessly from the waist ribbing.

Once you get the armholes the body is separated and knit flat to the shoulder where there are short row shoulder slopes and it is joined using a 3-needle bind off.  The sleeves are set-in using short rows from the top down and the shawl collar also uses short rows to be shaped.  (I guess I like short rows!).

This sample in shown on the model with several inches of positive ease.  For a more fitted version you could knit this with no ease or a little negative ease.  The ribbing will allow for enough stretch so it doesn’t become too tight, this also means that it will curve to your body without side shaping.

I’m looking forward to seeing a few finished Hathaways around…here is the sweater on my dress form before I sent it off.
